Magnetic particle inspection is a non destructive testing method of revealing surface and sub surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials.

The basic principle of the technique is to induce a magnetic field into the part under test. A discontinuity or crack will create a leakage flux which causes applied fine ferromagnetic particles to migrate to the area of the defect producing a clear outline of the crack. Sensitivity of inspection is enhanced by the use of fluorescent medium with examination under ultra violet (black light).
